In early July, Team Hunters had the pleasure of welcoming Freyah into our office for a week as part of her work experience.
She is a year nine student as well as our Managing Director’s daughter and this is her first-hand feedback of what it’s really like to work at Hunters:
First Impressions
I chose Hunters because I was curious about what it’s like to work in a creative furniture company and, if I’m honest, I wanted to see what my dad’s job is really like.
From the moment I walked in, it was completely different to what I expected. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which made me feel comfortable straight away.
It’s a very eventful office, with things like “lunch and learns” and interesting team meetings. One thing I noticed immediately was how modern and homely the office space is. It instantly put me at ease and made it easier to focus. I didn’t expect the office to be like this at all. It impressed me because it’s so different from other offices I’ve seen in London.
Learning from the team
Everyone helped me in different ways.
I had scheduled times to learn about each person’s job and their day-to-day work, which helped me realise how many different roles there are in just one company.
I also enjoyed seeing how the team communicates and works together to get things done. There are lots of different types of jobs – for example, the design team works closely with the sales team to help with specifications, documents and presentations.
Exploring the industry
During my time at Hunters, I got to explore different parts of the business and even visited some of their supplier's showrooms as well as client buildings. This showed me how much their furniture actually gets used.
I also spent time with lots of different people, which helped me develop my communication skills and feel more prepared for what work might be like in the future. I helped with a few tasks too, such as handing out and organising all the thank-you cards from the office, which made me realise how supportive everyone is of each other and how much they appreciate their teammates. I also helped film and edit videos for my Dad so he could see what my experience was like.
A culture of trust and freedom
One thing that surprised me was how open the office is. People are trusted to go out to visit clients or showrooms and come back when they’re done. I think this helps the team feel respected and trusted, and I could see how friendly and relaxed the culture is.
I felt very free, which was great – I didn’t feel stuck behind a desk. I got to explore new ideas, meet people, and visit showrooms, which also helped me learn more about the area.
It was interesting to see how everyone has their own responsibilities and works really hard to help the company grow and develop. But they also support each other and work as a team, even if their jobs are really different. A lot of them said that every day is different, and that’s one of their favourite things about working at Hunters.
Final thoughts
My favourite part of the week was meeting new people and going to different places like offices and showrooms. I started to feel at home in the office, and I’m really glad I had the chance to do work experience at Hunters.
I learned so much about the industry and the people who work there, and I’ll remember this experience because it gave me a real taste of what work is like.
